Sacha Baron Cohen apparently quit the project over ‘creative differences’ with the surviving Queen members over the type of movie he wanted to make.
Reports suggest that while the band’s guitarist Brian May and drummer Roger Taylor were interested in making a film suitable for a mass audience, Baron Cohen wanted the project to take darker look at Mercury’s personal life.
The movie project focuses on the early days of Queen, and their later success, culminating in their performance at the Live Aid concert in 1985.
There is currently no director attached to the project and they are now looking for suitable actors to play Freddie Mercury’s part.
A graduate of Cambridge University, Baron Cohen is most widely known for writing and playing four fictional characters: Ali G, Borat Sagdiyev, Brüno Gehard, and Admiral General Aladeen. Sacha Cohen is Jewish. He spent a year in Israel volunteering at Kibbutz Rosh HaNikra and Kibbutz Beit HaEmek as part of the Shnat Habonim Dror, as well as taking part in the programme Machon L’Madrichei Chutz La’Aretz for Jewish youth movement leaders.
